Author Manuscript Guidelines
Thank you for your interest in River Road Press. If you would like to submit your manuscript to us, please send one of the following:
FOR ALL SUBMISSIONS:
Please do not send original artwork or original manuscripts. Send only copies, as River Road Press is not responsible for the return or condition of submissions. Artwork in general is not required. The publisher reserves the right to select the illustrator.
All manuscripts must be sent by email ([email protected]) or U.S. Mail.

River Road Press receives many submissions each year. We make every effort to review all submissions in a timely manner. Please do not contact our office regarding status. Please be aware that the submissions process usually takes upwards of 6-9 months to complete, as we strive to give every manuscript the attention it deserves. Also, please note that we receive thousands of submissions, and if you do not hear from us, your book is not under consideration at the current time. Questions to ask when looking for a publisher:
Here are some red flags.
If the publisher cannot answer yes to all of the below listed questions, then find a publisher who can!
Thank you for your interest in River Road Press. If you would like to submit your manuscript to us, please send one of the following:
- For children’s picture books, send full manuscript.
- For all others, send either full manuscript OR table of contents plus three sample chapters.
- River Road Press does not accept query letters (where no manuscript is included).
- Children’s fiction and nonfiction picture books, chapter books, board books, middle readers, young adult books
- History and culture, cookbooks, education, and general interest
FOR ALL SUBMISSIONS:
- Send biographical material about the author (past publishing credentials, education, etc.)
- Send complete contact information, including e-mail, mailing address, and phone number(s).
- Materials submitted will NOT be returned. Please do not submit originals.

- Does the publisher welcome your input and encourage your collaboration throughout the process?
- Does the publisher encourage you to work closely with the illustrator or photographer (or do they plan to keep you apart)?
- Does the publisher include the author’s website on the book?
- Does the publisher provide you with a list of media outlets that they are sending press kits to?
- Does the publisher provide you with a list of sales outlets that they have sent review copies to?
- Does the publisher ask for media and sales leads from you and send out review copies based on your recommendation?
- Does the publisher tell you how many copies of your book they are printing?
- Does the publisher tell you how many copies of your book have sold, any point after publication?
- Does the publisher require that you buy a certain number of books, before they will give you the maximum allowable author discount?
- Does the publisher plan on a second edition of your book or are they planning just one print run (leaving you with an out of print book)?
- Does the publisher notify you when they are considering a reprint, so you can submit any additions or changes?
Guidelines for Illustrators
River Road Press accepts submissions from artists and illustrators who wish to work with both new and established authors. We work with artists to illustrate full-color picture books and full-color and black and white covers for our titles. We also enlist some illustrators to create black-and-white interior images and spot art.
We look for accomplished drawing and execution in the chosen medium. The ability to create a believable individual character is essential, as is the ability to understand, interpret and illustrate a literary text. Character development, consistency and accuracy, and thorough research are important.
Send samples of your work in a self-contained, labeled folder in the following formats:

- 4 to 8 samples of your work, digital proofs, tear sheets, press sheets (Please be sure to include your name and contact information on each sheet.)
- 1 copy of any published book or set of folded and gathered sheets
- Any number of images on a CD in jpeg or pdf format
- Original art
- Any material that you need returned. River Road Press cannot be responsible for returning submitted material.
